The Comfortable Technology of Motorized Wheelchairs

The technological advancement focused on wheelchairs has eased the cumbersome feeling of those who are dependent to it. Instead of sticking with manually operated wheelchairs, physically challenged individuals now have a choice to shift to motorized wheelchair scooters or the so-called electric-powered wheelchairs (EPWs). This comfortable type of wheelchair was developed by a member of the National Research Council of Canada named George Klein as a means of assistance to injured veterans of World War II.

Motorized wheelchairs are helpful for those who are either too weak to handle a manually powered wheelchair or have physical challenges on their upper extremities such as their arms, hands, and shoulders. This is also advisable for individuals who are suffering from cardiovascular problems and are not suppose to exert too much effort in manning their wheelchairs.

Generally, there are four types of motorized wheelchair scooters: the rear-wheel drive, the front-wheel drive, the mid-wheel drive, and the four-wheel drive. These also range from those that are easy to handle such as the small and portable kinds that can be folded and disassembled to those full-blown and multi-featured kinds that are necessary for those who are into serious therapies and are often known as ‘rehab’ chairs.

The great thing about motorized wheelchair scooters is that they have more tire power and powerbase options that make them suitable for numerous types of terrain and road structure whether the person using it is indoor or outdoor. It is also operated by a programmable joystick that allows a person to maneuver it in almost whatever way he/she wants, may it be on a wide or a narrow and tight spots. The seat of a motorized wheelchair is also functional because it provides more seating and postural support and it can also be adjusted to recline, tilt, or elevate.

The price of a motorized wheelchair ranges from around $1,600 to $7,500. This depends on the features and the materials used on a certain type of wheelchair.
